Berry Refreshing Blueberry Harbor
Blueberry Harbor
Blueberry Harbor
Ingredients
- One and a half cups of blueberries
- A single cup of granulated sugar
- One cup of newly picked mint leaves
- Two oz of vodka
- Half an ounce of juice from a fresh lemon
- Four fluid ounces of a cola beverage, like Pepsi
- A sprig of fresh mint and several blueberries, for garnish
Instructions
Step 1
To start making the blueberry-mint syrup, you'll want to combine 1 cup of water, some fresh blueberries, and sugar in a small saucepan. Place the saucepan over medium heat and wait for the mixture to come to a boil - you'll know it's ready when you see big bubbles rising to the surface. Once it's boiling, reduce the heat to a simmer and let it cook for about 5 minutes, stirring every now and then, until the blueberries start to break down and release their juices. As you stir, use the back of your spoon to gently mash the berries and help extract even more of their sweet and tangy flavor.
Step 2
Now that your blueberry syrup is ready, it's time to strain it. To do this, grab a fine-mesh strainer and place it over a clean, heatproof container - we want to make sure we catch every last drop of that delicious syrup. Gently pour the syrup into the strainer, pressing down on the solids with a spoon or spatula to extract as much liquid as possible - you'll start to see the liquid flowing freely, leaving behind a pile of blueberry pulp. As you wait for the syrup to cool completely, which should take about 30 minutes, you can discard the solids and take a moment to admire the beautiful, deep purple color of your syrup.
Step 3
Now it's time to bring your Blueberry Harbor cocktail to life. To start, fill a cocktail shaker with ice - and I mean a generous amount, you want it to be about half full. Next, add 1 1/2 ounces of vodka, 1/2 ounce of fresh lemon juice, and 1/4 cup of that delicious blueberry-mint syrup you made earlier to the shaker. Close the shaker tightly and get ready to shake - you'll know it's ready when the outside of the shaker is completely frosted and cold to the touch, which should take about 15 seconds of vigorous shaking.
Step 4
Now it's time to bring your Blueberry Harbor cocktail together. First, grab a chilled pint glass and add some fresh ice cubes to it - you want them to be nice and cold, straight from the freezer. Next, carefully strain your cocktail mixture into the glass, making sure not to spill a drop. As you pour, notice how the colors mix and the flavors start to meld together, then top it off with some cola, watching as the bubbles rise to the surface.
Step 5
Now that we've finished making our delicious blueberry syrup, it's time to think about storing any leftovers. To keep your syrup fresh, you'll want to transfer it to an airtight container - think a glass jar with a tight-fitting lid. Before you store it in the refrigerator, make sure the syrup has cooled to room temperature, which should take about 30 minutes to an hour, depending on the amount you have. Once it's cooled, pop the container in the fridge, where your blueberry syrup will keep for up to a week, waiting to be used in your next recipe.

My Tip
When making the blueberry-mint syrup, lightly mash the blueberries with the back of a spoon to extract more flavor. This helps release their juices and intensifies the syrup's flavor.
Leftovers
Store Blueberry Harbor in a glass jar with a tight-fitting lid to preserve the fizz. Reheat gently over low heat, whisking constantly, to prevent the cola from going flat.
Make It Your Own
Try swapping vodka for rum to give your Blueberry Harbor a warmer, richer flavor.
